I have been seeing a lot of sponsored ads on how to become a coach. I have also been seeing a lot of posts on social media lately from people claiming they are a coach or want to be a coach. So what’s all this hype around being a coach?
I believe people like the idea of saying “I’m a business coach”, “I’m an online coach”. It keeps the relevancy and level importance. Why is this important to some people? Let’s face it, everyone wants to be SOMEONE. No one wants to to feel or seem like they are important. When you decide to take the plunge into this entrepreneurial lifestyle you have to build your identity. The most common identity that everyone goes for is “IM a COACH”. And there is nothing wrong with being a COACH. The problem is when you claim to be a coach and you don’t know what the hell you are doing.
Now here is my biggest PET PEEVE!
Stop claiming to be a coach if you do not know what the hell you are doing AND you have never been coached before. You cannot teach someone if you never been helped. That is like saying you are a surgeon but you have never performed a surgery. You wouldn’t want to hire someone like that to cut on you so what would you think someone wants to hire you as a coach if you have never done the work?
Alas. . . to be or not to be a coach?! That is the question.
As I mentioned before, if you want to be a bad ass coach you must FIRST be coached. I am not talking about buying books and online courses. I am talking about you actually invested in hiring a coach to work with you privately. Private coaching allows the person assisting you to customize your experience to help develop a strategy just for you. This would not be a cookie-cutter experience.
Furthermore, a coach will help you identify the WHY. Why do you want to be a coach? Is it to wear as a badge of honor or are you really interested in helping people?
How to choose a coach:
1.) Ask your business girlfriends that has success who have they worked with. Referrals are QUEEN!
2.) Do some research. Google is your best friend. Look up business coaches in your industry. Get on the email lists join some of their email lists and gauge their communication style. Buy some of their products and determine if its helpful.
3.) Stalk potential coaches. I know this sounds creepy but you have to make sure that who you are hiring is the REAL DEAL.
Today, we are in a oversaturated market of entrepreneurs. With the luxury of technology, anyone can practically start a business from virtually everywhere. You want to make sure that you are standing out from the crowd. Therefore, you don’t want to be another “coach”. That is why you need to be coached first before hanging your shingle. A coach will help you identify your “IT FACTOR”. What makes you unique? Why should people hire you ? What do you bring to the table?
